Performance of Philippine Top Non-Traditional Coconut Products Exports in May

Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority show 17 non-traditional coconut products generated export revenue of over USD100,000 in the month of May this year, two products more than the previous month’s 15. Likewise, the number of products that sold more than USD1.000 million increased from six in the previous month to 10 currently, the biggest so far on record. This comprised of virgin coconut oil, coconut oil other, coconut water concentrates, fatty acid distillates, glycerin, toilet/bath soap, hydrogenated coconut oil, coco milk powder, coconut acid oil, coco chips.
VIRGIN COCONUT OIL maintained prior month’s leading position with export earnings of USD8.375 million from sales of 5,078 MT, increasing by 28.1% from 3,965 MT last year. Bulk of the month’s shipment went to the USA at 3,961 MT (78.0% of total). Other destinations were Germany 204 MT (4.0%), China 153 MT (3.0%), New Zealand 124 MT (2.4%), Australia 111 MT (2.2%), United Kingdom 108 MT (2.1%) and 16 others with uptake ranging 2-79 MT. The latter group consisted of Mexico, Netherlands, Colombia, Japan, Argentina, Malaysia, Indonesia, Finland, Lithuania, Poland, Peru, Taiwan, Greece, South Korea, Canada, Hong Kong.
Likewise, COCONUT OIL, OTHER category remained second place with turnover of USD3.361 million after trading 1,158 MT. Tonnage leaped 81.7% from prior year at 637 MT. The USA also took in a good chunk of the shipment at 879 MT (75.9%). Other markets were Canada 95 MT (8.2%), China 42 MT (3.6%), South Korea 38 MT (3.2%), United Kingdom 37 MT (3.2%) and six other countries namely Belgium, Australia, Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia with uptake ranging 2-19 MT.
COCONUT WATER CONCENTRATES similarly remained in the third spot as in previous month. Total income during the month was USD2.929 million from orders amounting to 846 MT, an improvement from 671 MT by 26.2%. The USA was top market at 421 MT (49.8%), trailed by China at 294 MT (34.8%). Smaller loads went to Vietnam 53 MT (6.3%), Netherlands 47 MT (5.6%), Thailand 20 MT (2.3%) and Canada 11 MT (1.3%).
Occupying the fourth slot was FATTY ACID DISTILLATES which earned USD2.612 million. However, volume fell 47.3% to 1,560 MT from 2,962 MT previously. The USA was almost an exclusive market with uptake at 1,474 MT responsible for 94.4%. The remainder went to Spain at 87 MT (5.6%).
GLYCERIN was fifth in the list with export proceeds of USD2.132 million from overseas purchases of 2,655 MT, a reduction by 16.0% from 3,160 MT a year ago. China was primary importer cornering 1,269 MT (47.8%), followed by Japan at 777 MT (29.3%), USA 378 MT (14.3%), South Korea 149 MT (5.6%) and four others with orders ranging 10-26 MT namely Malaysia, Australia, Taiwan, France.
Ranked sixth was TOILET/BATH soap which generated USD1.547 million. Volume of sales at 618 MT leaped 79.1% from the preceding year at 345 MT. Top four destinations were United Arab Emirates at 127 MT (20.6%), Indonesia 121 MT (19.5%), Singapore 109 MT (17.6%), and Vietnam 106 MT (17.1%). Eighteen other importers took in smaller loads ranging 0.20-40 MT. This included Kuwait, USA, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, Qatar, Taiwan, New Zealand, India, Canada, Thailand, Australia, Japan, Italy, Fiji, Macau, Netherlands, Virgin Islands.
HYDROGENATED COCONUT OIL was top seven with revenue of USD1.314 million and sales of 1,236 MT. Last year’s shipment was 1,479 MT which placed current volume at 16.4% off. The USA was key outlet at 519 MT (41.9%), trailed by the United Kingdom at 371 MT (30.0%) and Taiwan 210 MT (17.0%). Six other countries received smaller loads ranging 10-39 MT namely Canada, Australia, Netherlands, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea.
COCONUT MILK POWDER held the eighth spot with delivery of 232 MT worth USD1.193 million. This month’s tonnage was 15.7% higher than last year at 200 MT. Major destinations were the USA at 48 MT (20.6%), Australia 41 MT (17.8%) and Italy 40 MT (17.1%). Smaller orders were made by France 26 MT (11.2%), Netherlands 25 MT (11.0%), Mexico 23 MT (9.9%), Japan 14 MT (6.0%), Taiwan 13 MT (5.0%), and Spain 2 MT.
COCONUT ACID OIL held the ninth position with export receipts amounting to USD1.187 million from delivery of 1,873 MT. This month’s order rocketed 254.8% from 528 MT a year ago. China was principal market capturing 1,608 MT (85.8%). The remainder went to Pakistan at 183 MT (9.8%) and India 82 MT (4.4%).
Rounding up the top 10 non-traditional coconut exports was COCONUT CHIPS with turnover of USD1.093 million. Shipment at 512 MT jumped nearly 19folds from only 27 MT in the prior year. The USA was virtually a sole market with uptake at 475 MT or 92.8% of total trade. The balance was shared by South Korea 26 MT, Israel 11 MT, and Japan 0.7 MT.
The next seven leading non-traditional coconut products exports were Biodiesel, Nata de Coco, Coconut Milk Liquid, Coir Products, Coco Flour, Coco Peat/Dust, Young Coconut (chips/meat, dried, sliced). Details to follow next week’s UWB.
