Export Performance of Philippine Top Non-Traditional Coconut Products in December 2023

Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed there were 17 non-traditional coconut products that generated export revenue of over USD100,000 in the month of December, same as last month. The number of products that turned in more than USD1.000 million in sales increased to eight from six last month. These products were virgin coconut oil, coconut water, hydrogenated coconut oil, coconut milk powder, coconut water concentrates, fatty acid distillates, glycerin, toilet/bath soap.
Leading the pack was VIRGIN COCONUT OIL with turnover of USD6.667 million from sales off 2,520 MT, a sharp leap by 44.2% over same month last year at 1,747 MT. The USA remained the top destination cornering 1,492 MT (59.2% of total). Other destinations were China at 336 MT (13.4%), Germany 204 MT (8.1%), United Kingdom 106 MT (4.2%), Netherlands 96 MT (3.8%), Spain 77 MT (3.1%) and 11others which took in 1-50 MT for a market share of 8.2%. The group comprised of Canada, Turkey, Australia, Colombia, New Zealand, Czech Republic, Japan, Malaysia, France, Hong Kong, Taiwan.
COCONUT WATER was this month’s top 2. It earned USD5.737 million from delivery of 6,824 MT (no export last year). The USA also was principal importer of coconut water, just like in virgin coconut oil, responsible for 3,922 MT (57.5%), trailed by United Kingdom at 1,509 MT (22.1%). Other markets were Canada at 537 MT (7.9%), Netherlands 324 MT (4.8%) Singapore 135 MT (2.0%), Hong Kong 101 MT (1.5%), Australia 96 (1.4%). Six other countries with orders ranging 18-57 MT took in the remaining 2.9%: South Korea, France, New Zealand, China, Japan, Norway.
In the third spot was HYDROGENATED COCONUT OIL with revenue of USD5.065 million. Volume sold was 2,308 MT, nearly twice (+82.3%) last year at 1,266 MT, with China as market leader capturing 1,247 MT (54.0%). Other country buyers were Canada at 487 MT (21.1%), Australia 397 MT (17.2%), Netherlands 164 MT (7.1%), and Japan 13 MT (0.5%).
Occupying fourth place was COCO MILK POWDER with export proceeds of USD2.474 million from external trade of 1,530 MT. Current tonnage was more than five times the previous year at 300 MT (+410.2%). The USA was almost the exclusive importer of this product at 1,240 MT (81.0%). Smaller loads were shipped to United Kingdom at 100 MT (6.5%), Japan 71 MT (4.6%), South Korea 35 MT (2.3%), China 25 MT (1.7%), and five other countries with uptake ranging 6-19 MT for a combined volume of 60 MT (3.9%). This included Australia, Vietnam, Taiwan, Netherlands, Spain.
COCONUT WATER CONCENTRATE held the fifth position as it turned in USD2.344 million from overseas purchases of 749 MT, a bigger load by 14.5% compared to 654 MT year-earlier. The USA likewise took the lead, just as it did in coconut water, capturing 382 MT (51.1%), tracked by Netherlands at 118 MT (15.8%), China 114 MT (15.2%), Brazil 71 MT (9.5%), Thailand 49 MT (6.1%), Taiwan 14 MT (1.9%), and Malaysia at 0.4 MT.
FATTY ACID DISTILLATES was ranked sixth. Income at USD1.753 million came from sale of 3,056 MT during the month, a 71.5% jump from the preceding year at 1,782 MT. China nearly cornered all the month’s shipment with her order of 2,672 MT (87.4%). The balance went to Netherlands at 118 MT (3.9%), Germany 118 MT (3.9%), Pakistan 105 MT (3.5%), and Taiwan 42 MT (1.4%).
The seventh slot was taken by GLYCERIN, registering a USD1.621 million turnover as it sold 1,772 MT. This month’s orders, which steeply reduced by 49.0% the prior year total at 3,473 MT, were chiefly delivered to China at 1,042 MT (58.8%). The remainder was shared by Japan at 402 MT (22.7%), Malaysia 116 MT (6.5%), South Korea 103 MT (5.8%), Thailand 61 MT (3.4%), USA 47 MT (2.7%), Vietnam 2 MT.
The eighth million-dollar earner during the month was TOILET/BATH SOAP with gross export receipts of USD1.586 million from shipment of 495 MT, a lower load than last year at 689 MT by 28.2%. Key markets were Thailand and Indonesia with respective uptakes at 123 MT (24.9%) and 122 MT (24.7%). Smaller loads were delivered to Singapore at 90 MT (18.3%), Vietnam 75 MT (15.2%), Japan 25 MT (5.1%), Nigeria 25 MT (5.0%), United Arab Emirates 10 MT (2.0%), United Kingdom 7 MT (1.5%) and 11 others with uptake below 4 MT. The latter group with combined quantity of 17 MT (3.4%) comprised of Papua New Guinea, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, USA, Taiwan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia, Macau, Canada, Guam.
Rounding up the top 10 non-traditional coconut products export were Coconut Milk Liquid and Coconut Oil, other. COCONUT MILK LIQUID generated USD924,634 from orders amounting to 764 MT, substantially reducing by 57.2% year-earlier data at 1,786 MT. Malaysia cornered a huge part of the month’s shipment with uptake of 535 MT (70.0%). Following behind was United Kingdom at 199 MT (26.1%) and five other countries which together held 30 MT (3.9%) namely, Israel, France, Canada, USA, Qatar.
COCONUT OIL, OTHER category sold 235 MT worth USD546,573. Volume was scaled back by 79.5% from 1,146 MT in the previous year. Leading markets were Canada at 89 MT (38.1%) and China at 84 MT (35.9%). Six other countries collectively held 61 MT (26.1%) and took in volume ranging 1-17 MT, namely Hong Kong, Australia, Taiwan, Singapore, Colombia, Jordan.
The next seven non-traditional exports turned in between USD130,000 and USD467,158. This included Coco Chips, Biodiesel, Coco Peat/Dust, Coconut Acid Oil, Nata de Coco, Shampoo, and Coir Products. Details in next week’s issue of the UCAP Weekly Bulletin.
